United Nations Food and Agriculture (FAO) Organization - When it comes to emergencies, the FAO's focus is on food production and agriculture,
reflecting its specialization and responsibility within the United Nations family. Assisting in
preventing disaster-related emergencies, providing early warnings of food emergencies and
helping in rehabilitation of food production systems are FAO's predominant roles in
humanitarian aid. The main forms of FAO's intervention include needs assessments,
provision of agricultural inputs and technical assistance for the planning and management of
sustainable recovery and rehabilitation of rural productions systems.

WHO Health Information Network for Advanced Planning - HINAP consolidates baseline health
information by country, identifies health issues of primary concern,
and makes this information available for program planning. Up-to-date
information is provided during an emergency, permitting program
adjustment due to changing circumstances, thereby minimizing mortality
and morbidity from preventable causes. HINAP currently includes health
indices, profiles, and analyses, plus outbreak verification, for nine
countries: Albania, Angola, Colombia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Indonesia,
Nigeria, Tajikistan, Uganda.

World Bank: Disaster Management Facility (DMF) - Developing countries suffer the greatest costs when disaster hits
- more than 95% of all deaths caused by disasters occur in developing
countries, and losses due to natural disasters are 20 times greater
(as a percent of GDP) in developing countries than in industrial
countries. World Bank lending has increased greatly over the last
decade (to about $8.8 billion) in response to both sudden-onset events
(e.g., earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and forest
fires) and slow-onset events, such as droughts, in every region of
bank involvement. However, poorly planned development can turn a recurring natural
phenomenon into a human and economic disaster. To deal with these issues, in July 1998 the World Bank
established the DMF to ensure that disaster prevention and mitigation
are integral parts of development programs. The DMF provides
operational support, promoting capacity-building and establishing
partnerships with the international and scientific community working
on disaster issues.
