Disaster Management : Research

blue right-pointing arrow Natural Disaster Reference Database (NDRD) - The Natural Disaster Reference Database (NDRD) is a bibliographic database (maintained by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center) on research, programs, and results which relate to the use of satellite remote sensing for disaster mitgation. The NDRD was compiled and abstracted from articles published since 1981. This database is no longer maintained but remains on-line as a useful resource for disaster researchers worldwide. pop (Added: 29-Oct-1998 Hits: 7093)  [Spider URL]"

Disciplines : Climate

blue right-pointing arrow NASA/GSFC Earth-Sun Exploration Division - The Earth-Sun Exploration Division, located in a Maryland suburb outside of Washington, DC, is home to the largest organization of combined scientists and engineers in the United States dedicated to learning and sharing their knowledge of the Earth. The mission of the Earth-Sun Exploration Division involves the research, development, and application of advanced space technologies to develop better knowledge of the distribution and characteristics of Earth's natural resources and how they are changing; and to develop a better understanding of the processes affecting global change. pop (Added: 29-Oct-1998 Hits: 6585)  [Spider URL]"

Type : Comets and Asteroids

blue right-pointing arrow Asteroid Comet Impact Hazards - This site created by the NASA Ames Space Science Division provides an excellent overview of the hazards that result from asteroid or cometary collisions with the Earth. The site includes news, reports, articles, U.S. Congressional hearings and statements, Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) information, current NASA programs addressing NEOs, and a picture gallery. pop (Added: 25-Sep-1998 Hits: 1724)  [Spider URL]"

blue right-pointing arrow Earthquakes with 1,000 or More Deaths from 1900 - This web page maintained by the National Earthquake Information Center (USGS) lists all earthquakes that resulted in 1,000 deaths or more since 1900. It specifies the date, location, coordinates, number of deaths, magnitude, and comments. pop (Added: 12-Nov-1998 Hits: 1769)  [Spider URL]"

Type : Flooding

blue right-pointing arrow Significant Floods in the United States During the 20th Century - The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has issued a fact sheet entitled "Significant Floods in the United States During the 20th Century - USGS Measures a Century of Floods," by Charles A. Perry. According to Perry, during the 20th century, floods were the number one disaster in the United States, both in terms of lives lost and property damage. Since 1900 flooding has killed more than 10,000 people, and property damage from flooding now totals over $1 billion a year. The fact sheet discusses 32 significant floods that occurred during the 20th century, broken down into six types: large regional floods, flash floods, storm surge, ice-jam floods, dam and levee failure, and mudflow. The fact sheet names the flood brought on by the September 1900 Galveston Hurricane as the worst of the century. Besides examining these disasters, this Web site also describes the survey's efforts to measure floods and lists additional sources of flood information on the Internet. pop (Added: 22-May-2000 Hits: 2200)  [Spider URL]"
